Unofficial ‘Final’ Contract Offer Results

The unofficial results are in…77.28% of full-time academic staff cast their ballots with 51.25% voting to accept the colleges’ final offer and 48.74% voting to reject the offer.  The official results will be determined by the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) after a review of all of the ballots, including segregated ballots and mail-in ballots; this should take approximately 10 days.

I totally agree! I’ve been coming on this site regularly to see the results, its been 11 days and still nothing. 10 days, minus weekends and family day. It feels like it’s been forever, and now we have to wait until mid-week! I really hope to know before Wednesday considering I have a mid-term Wednesday! Anyways, some answers would be FANTASTIC!

i think it’s timejust to hang up this entire situation. This would be the second stike that i would have gone through at this school. Talks of strikes has put on more pressure towards the students then actually having one. The one is 2006 was terrible and stressed out a lot of people to the point where they quit. If a lof a teachers actually cared about the students education they would vote not to have this strike until summer time. Yes, i know that doesn’t really do anything or scare too many people but have it at the end of summer and treaten not to come back at the beginning of the year. So people say it’s not about money, but they are asking for more of it, 5.9% increase i believe it is over a few years. We just got out of a reccession and already asking for more money. Let’s try and get our economy back on track and balanced before more demands. Stop this strike, you’re not trying to better our education, you are only hurting it in the long run.

Just found the article I posted down below. This just makes me think I was right before in saying we are all being jerked around by the schools and the union. So much for education or our hard earned money.

this was on the TB News web site:

The waiting game continues for students attending Confederation College and other colleges across Ontario as a looming labour dispute remains unsettled.

Last week some 9,000-college faculty across Ontario voted 51 per cent in favour of the employer’s final contract offer.

OPSEU, the union representing the faculty, had set an official strike date for Wednesday.

But the union now says an official Labour Relations Board count of all the ballots will take place next Wednesday, postponing the strike deadline indefinitely.

Today would be the strike date if teachers rejected the offer..

They said that it would take 10 days for mail in ballots to be counted. This COULD change the percentile of rejects and accepts of the offer. So basically we have to wait until Feb 20. And if they decide to go on strike they need a 5 day notice…

NEW STRIKE DATE 25… If there lazy 26th.

I think people should realize that NOW its no longer about money, whom ever came on this site and said money wasn’t part of this whole fiasco, was totally wrong, now money is no longer the issue, all that’s left issue wise is stuff relating to students more then teachers. People need to understand that the money was at one point a hold out in there negotiations and it wasn’t until recently (before the in favor vote happened) that both sides settled on a dollar amount increase per year. I find it a little odd that the offer is “more then agreeable” after the whole money fiasco was dealt with…but I wont beat a dead horse. Yes the problem now was class hours, extra help time etc etc and I don’t know any specifics on class hours etc for teachers now. I just don’t need to hear another teacher say “were doing this for you” when I KNOW that (at least initially) it wasnt about us at all.

This all being said, its very likely that we are not striking, even with the uncounted votes (which i heard was around 300 or something like that), 210 votes is all that separated the vote in terms of for and against, so the odds that 300 votes would swing the vote to against the offer is highly unlikely, considering how the vote went overall and the fact that the votes are being mailed in all over the place.
Its the only reason why the vote results are “Unofficial” and not official.

Ya’ sure pal, and I suppose you have experience in the workforce to base that decision on? When you’re not being treated fairly as a person who deserves as much respect as the next guy in regards to working conditions, you may choose to be complacent, but I would like to exercise my options, and if a strike would make things better for everyone in the long run, including the students, because noone really knows what kind of impact this will have on students in the long run. In my opinion whatever is going to be better for the instructors will probably make it easier for the students. I think some students are being one sided and playing the poor me’s, but I’m sure everything will work out for the greater good.

      Everybody, just chill…

Even if there is a strike, life will go on.

Keep up with the homework, keep studying so when it is over you haven’t screwed yourselves. We’re all supposed to be grown ups right? Sorry if that sounds harsh to those of you who need your hand held still, but what are you going to do when you hit the working world? Think about it.

If they do strike, eventually they will likely be legislated back to work before the term will be lost. They will just have to cram it all in (hence, the advice above), and maybe there will be fewer marked assignments/tests, which means they will be weighted more heavily.

The term can’t easily just be “extended” because another term starts right on its heels.

So try not to stress too much people.

Although the bigger colleges have accepted the offer, you have to realize that money is not the issue here, the time they have to prepare for classes, and exams, as well as correcting time is one of the issues that are currently being negotiated, however the government is trying to take that away all together and the teachers are trying to fight in order to keep their class prep and correcting time, if they dont then our college education will go down the drain and the quality of education will never be the same

Your right I also did the math. But really there is no use doing the math on those numbers. They don’t count those numbers anyway. It is not school specific, or out of the number of schools. It is professor specific. So one large school with 1 000 teaches that voted to strike could counter 3 or 4 small colleges. But I agree this is getting really annoying.

Yes, But If they did it like that, then that means that the larger colleges would have more voting power due to more teachers being employed than the smaller colleges, and seeing as how the issue must be taken in as a whole with all colleges being equal, then the smaller colleges are not even represented properly.

          That’s democracy, Truthseeker.

Example: a group of small towns vote for one candidate, while larger cities voted for another. The larger cities had more voters, and the candidate they favored becomes president. This, in a nutshell, is the democratic process.

Each professor (as a union member) has a voted which is weighted equally, regardless of their college.

A reason why a large percentage of Fanshawe instructors voted to accept yes was because, many instructors like thier working environment, London, ON just came off a lengthy, emotionally scarring public transit strike and the teachers I have said the offer is more than reasonable, given the current economy in London, ON. I can’t speak for other college working conditions.

I don’t know where you get off saying something like this. The Universities have their own problems as well. I have attended both College and Unviersity and was actually a student at the Univeristy just a couple years ago when they had their strike. Not all professors at the College’s want to strike, a lot of this has to do with the Union if you have been following this topic. All I have to say is go to Univeristy and tell me where you end up in a few years, I can almost bet you will be back at college because you will need the hands on experience; theroy is good but it wont land you a job in a lot of fields. Good Luck !

I feel that everyone is being jerked around here, as far as I am concerned the voting should be done all the teachers knew when the vote was being held if the votes were not in by the end of the voting day they should not count. Therefore it was a close vote but it was in favour of the offer. All the colleges are doing now is stalling and creating anxiety amongst students and parents who spent thier hard earned money for an education.

The descrepancies with the numbers can be explained by a weighting system. Odds are that the bigger schools with more faculty members were weighted heigher than those that weren’t. For example, a school with 1,000 teachers with 60% of the instructors voting yes would result in 600 teachers voting yes. But in a school with 100 teachers, and 60% voting yes, only 60 teachers would vote yes. But the percentages are still the same. Get it?

I am a student and I also belong to a union. I have been a proud union member for over 16 years. Please be aware that because of unions there are statutory holidays, vacation pay, overtime pay, paid vacations and the list goes on. Unions certainly have a place in the labour market

Of course, I would prefer for there not to be a strike. However, if there is I can totally understand why. Let’s remember that the union asked for binding arbitration and the colleges said no! Please read and research a little before making yourself look like a fool by saying so many inaccurate things.

Our instructors want to have enough time to do their job properly and thoroughly. They do not want over-sized classes and less time to mark and evaluate their students.

It seems that the colleges would prefer to pack the classrooms and fill their pockets with our tuition money.

Whatever the outcome I hope that the students and faculty can benefit and that our education here in Ontario is continued to be held in high regard.

So once again please inform yourself and look at both sides of the story and think about how you would want to be treated as an instructor.

If its such a bad deal, why did 4285 professors vote to accept it? The union did not listen to its membership!

When 57% say ok to strike you should know as a union that your members are not that upset with the deal. This union ignored that result and pushed ahead and when the new offer went out the majority said good enough.

You sound like a typical union goon. “Hey members we are smarter than you, go on strike”

What arrogance!! If you truly ‘cared ‘ about membersyou’d listen to them but most union leaders think they are smarter than their membership. Well OPSEU just got its butt kicked and the union bargaining team was handed a vote of no confidence and should resign.

they asked for a TSTRONG REJECT VOTE AND INSTEAD GOT AN ACCEPTANCE.

Did you hear the voices of the 4285 or like most union leaders its just easier to ignore that and make excuses!

Unions have had their day, they were an important part in making labour relations and laws what they are today.I say thanks to that. But today all they do is protect the lazy, greedy few that know how to play the system.I’ll bet most people in the unions wouldn’t be in one if they didn’t have to.The unions have ads on tv and radio telling their members to not accept the deal.If i was a teacher I wouldn’t want someone else telling me what I should or shouldn’t do.I would decide for myself. The unions are trying to manipulate the members so they can justify their own existance.but you members just keep paying them to have big conferences at the deerhurst on your dime.Take the caw as an example, sure they get it’s members a little more each time they have a contract, but their membership has shrunk by a huge percentage.Layoffs.Cutbacks. It’s got to stop somewhere.I say if the teachers go on strike then the students should go on strike next year. They should take a year off,go to work, stay in high school whatever.Drop the enrollment numbers and let the colleges lay some taechers off. It would be the same as what they plan to do to the students.
I’m so sick and tired of everyday hearing this union is striking or working to rule. This is the reason the west is losing so many jobs overseas. No one wants to work. They want to complain all the time or have commitees for this and that.Go to work, do your job, go home. It’s so simple.

Our instructors have told us that we are getting less time in class because they have let more people in to our program usually there is only two sections and now there are four and each class is packed. http://www.cp24.com/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20100210/100210_college/20100210/?hub=CP24Home

This is a link to CP24, a Toronto news station, with their story on the current vote. It basically says that even though the vote was majority 51.25%, the union states that this “…is too close to determine whether the offer has been accepted or rejected…” and that they need to ballot in the extra 300 mail-in votes. Also “The union for Ontario’s community colleges said it will not take a rejected ‘final’ offer from the college directly to the teachers.” Also, “The instructors had already set a February 17 strike date, but if the offer is ultimately rejected, a new strike date will be determined.” (all quotes taken directly from news article)

I understand that they need time to tally the mail-ins, that’s a given, but when the union says that it’s too close to call, I call bullshit. Not only that, but if it does cave in and they need to go back to the negotiating table, the strike date will be further delayed. As if half of the student population isn’t already worried about their money and time going to waste. Delays and extensions only further that worry (at least in my case).

In short, I’m tired of it, make a decision.

So again, the stike is still uncertain, and could or courld not happen. and again .. will be pushed back a bit seeing as they need 10 days to process, and the strike was set to happen this coming wed, 17th. Pulled from the OPSEU website (http://www.opseu.org/news/press2010/feb-10-2010.htm) – Emphasis mine

TORONTO – ***Results of the vote by faculty in Ontario’s 24 community colleges on the employer’s last contract offer are too close to determine whether the offer has been accepted or rejected***.

Faculty have voted 51 per cent to accept the employer’s offer, a margin of just 210 votes. Now at issue is the number of mail-in votes, over 300 ballots, which once received could change the vote results. Those results may not be known for up to 10 days or more.

***Ted Montgomery, chair of the OPSEU bargaining team for the faculty, says that the union will have to get a clear determination of the final vote count before any decisions are made.***

“Right now we do not have a clear and final majority either way,” Montgomery said. “Until we know for sure whether our members have accepted or rejected the employer offer, we cannot move forward.”

Montgomery said that if the offer is ultimately rejected, the union will then determine a new strike date and call on the Colleges to return to the bargaining table to negotiate a fair collective agreement.

“If rejected, we will ask the employer to immediately resume negotiations,” Montgomery said. “And, failing a negotiated contract, we will again urge the Colleges to submit all outstanding issues to binding arbitration.”

OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas says if the eventual outcome is a rejection of the employer’s offer, a strike can still be completely avoided.

“We do not want any disruption to the students,” Thomas said. “We have maintained the position all along that if we can’t get an agreement, binding arbitration is how we want to proceed. ***If the Colleges don’t agree, then they and they alone will be responsible for jeopardizing the education of 200,000 Ontario college students.”***

So, bascially this means that we know…nothing. No final word yet on whether or not there will be a strike.

I really wish they would get this over with. Yes or No (preferring no) to a strike. Either shit, or get off the pot, as it were.
