With the counsel of the provincial mediator, both sides have agreed to recess negotiations until Tuesday, January 26th. Both bargaining teams have been back at the table for the last three days in an effort to reach a new collective agreement.
No word yet on whether or not any progress was made in moving both sides closer to a new agreement.

Nekotigerfire- you stupid stupid fool, OSAP is NOT free money, it’s a loan that helps pay for schooling for those who otherwise could not afford it, so while you graduate on Daddy’s dollar, think about those that have worked their asses off, and now have a huge loan to payback. R E T A R D

This is an easy issue to fix if students want to take the lead.
Both the union AND management must know that a strike is unacceptable at this time.
College presidents and well as union leaders must know that both will be held accountable by students and their families, and the best way to do that is to E-mail union leaders AND college presidents and copy College minister John Milloy and your own MPP to that effect.
Too many people and too much at stake not to settle this without a strike.
Tell both sides that they must continue bargaining non-stop until this is settled fairly!

Seriously?! AGAIN?!
This time can they please just come to a conclusion? Strike or no-strike…please please come to conclusion and let all the students know whether or not the strike will proceed…and if so, what contingency plans there will be…
=.= people need to plan ahead…we all have lives to live and time isn’t going to stop or even slow down because of this delay in decision making. PLEASE…

From what I understand, even if they strike, which it looks like they will, most of the schools are going to push through the semester once the strike is over.
I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not, but it makes me a bit happier to know that I won’t lose my money. And just for the record, people on OSAP will still have to pay for the loan, just because the school goes on strike doesn’t mean they will get the money for free, maybe in a perfect world…which this clearly is not

A few people are commenting on getting the presidents of the colleges to get involved. Although i don’t disagree, the president at Humber offered the teachers a raise before the new year in good faith, but it didn’t seem to be good enough. We need to pressure both sides. That means pressuring the presidents to get to the bargaining table with a bit of a sweeter offer as well as pressuring our government to force the teachers to work and at the very least, push a potential strike until the end of the semester. Strike all you want before the next semester starts and before the students have invested in their non-existent future.
Come to think of it, that would work in favor of the teachers. Students will come get refunds before the semester starts and put incredible pressure on the colleges to reach a collective agreement before they lose all their customers.

Obviously you are not taking labour relations at school or economics for that matter.
You say sweeten the deal eh….so if the union wants more and more and more when can you go no further? The colleges have said thats all we have…your answer is just like the unions….sweeten it sweeten it, sweeten it!

“Some people have it lucky to have OSAP or something that pays for them.”
Are you ignorant? OSAP loans us money for our education. No one “gives” away money.

The reason they’re waiting for the 26th to continue is that the withdrawl date for a lot of courses is the 26th. If students withdrew from the semester before then they’d be due a full refund.
Now everyone has a whole day left to decide on taking a chance that the teachers will strike and get all their money back, or gamble that they won’t and stay registered for your courses…
The college would be expletive deleted if everyone pulled out of the semester. Instead, we’re held hostage…

Students must question college management as much as questioning their teachers.
It takes two to tango and both sides have equal responsibility in keeping a strike from happening in February. Work together through your students councils and federations to really apply pressure to both sides. Managers and teachers are paid by your tuition and your tax dollars, so they work for you and must listen to you!
E-mails to college presidents are just as effective as ones to unions and faculty. So let them know what you think.

This is pathetic! Make a deal already!! Oh and by the way, people on OSAP are NOT lucky, they DO pay for their school, just at a later date, so while you lucky rich kids graduate and start working they come out of school full of debt and student loans.

I had heard that they are trying to hold off going on strike until reading week so if they strike we lose as little time as possible.

I notice that some of the student federation websites only tell students to talk to their teachers. Well, a majority of the teachers province wide voted for a strike and now that decision is in the hands of the union. That train has left the station!
What students must do now is talk to the top college management, Presidents, Vice Presidents Academic, Deans and Associate Deans, to try and get that side to change their stance. It takes two to tango, and it is very possible that college management is simply out of step. Imposing their terms and conditions on faculty instead of continuing to bargain in good faith is a very clear indication of that.
Any E-mail you send to top college management should be copied to colleges Minister John Milloy and even the Premiere, as they like to stay arms length from these negotiations, but can’t do so with this much at stake.
Students have all the power here if they just exert it and stop feeling so powerless!
And if you can’t do it yourself, push your student federations to do it with you.
See the E-mail addresses of John Milloy and others on this website. College management E-mails are easily found on individual college websites under “staff directories” or “contact us”.

Your answer is to give more money to teachers…mmmm when is enough enough?
In your world just give the union more? Thats the problem, Colleges have been doing that for years and thism greedy union knows that….

As long as they fix this soon or something, I don’t mind. But its a little idiotic that they are taking this long to figure this out. did anyone notice that the set the vote while we were at school? the biggest reason for this is that WE have to stay at school and wait for THEM and not the other way around, and we would have to pay for our dues. Just like to point that out, but they did that to people that are paying for the programs and must finish the pay no matter IF school went on strike. Some people have it lucky to have OSAP or something that pays for them.

If you want to avoid the strike, the only people who can stop it are the college presidents.
E-mail them and copy your MPP. Tell them to rescind their imposed terms and conditions and bargain in good faith! They are the ones with the power to stop this strike!

Don’t blame the teachers for this! E-mail your college president and tell them to lift their imposed terms and conditions. That is the only way to keep the teachers from striking.

E-mail the college presidents because they have the power to end this potential strike. They are the ones who imposed their will on the faculty. How did you expect the faculty to react??

The teachers can’t do anything about this now, they gave the union a strike mandate.
We should all E-mail our college presidents and tell them to get a settlement now, before the faculty go out on strike. They have the power to do this!

So can this be seen as a good thing, where some progress has been made and each side is going to mull it through. Or can it be a bad thing where each side is fed up with the others offers and a 4 day break is needed to get back a level head.
So much confusion and uncertainty. I just wish they would figure it out one way or another as soon as possible because I need to know what I will be doing if there is a strike (work/placement etc..)

Oh yea, let’s just keep this hanging by a thread a little longer. Seriously, stop being babies and just make a decision. Strike or not, I don’t care, but I’m starting to get into assignments, and I would like to know the fate of my semester sooner rather than later.
